Art has the power to change the world. I truly believe that. The process is a long one, however, and at times of real, immediate suffering, artists are often found asking themselves what their role is. Therefore, I was thrilled to see the arts community immediately come out in force to take action to help the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. There are tons of fundraisers going on all over the country (and probably the world), so I can’t even begin to make a complete list, but I can point out two that I’ll be taking part in directly:
This Sunday, January 24, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm at Gateway Yoga. Local percussion whiz Jubal Creech is putting together a group to play Haitian and Haitian-inspired rhythms along with dancing, hooping, yoga, and meditation to “Celebrate the Culture and People of Haiti and to raise Money,
Awareness, and Love for the Haitian Disaster Relief Projects.” Come out and join in, as well as making a donation. For More info visit, gatewayyoga.com Or picklemamas.com.
February 5, 6, 7 at The LoDi Project. Artists from around teh world are donating works to be sold for $25 each, all proceeds going to directly to Mercy Corps. I’ll be providing “mood music” on Friday from 6-9, as well as premiering a new solo percussion work composed specifically for the event. I’ll probably perform the piece once each hour during the evening so everyone has a chance to experience it. Since the piece won’t be in a tangible, “take home” form, I ask that those who enjoy the piece make an additional donation directly to Mercy Corps at the event. For more info go to the LoDi Project website.
